A linear bearing is a bearing system that is designed to offer free motion in one direction. There are many types of linear bearings in the industry. Motorized linear slides such as machine slides, XY tables, and some dovetail slides are bearings moved by power mechanisms. Regarding the mechanism, not all the linear bearings are motorized and some non-motorized dovetail slides, ball bearing slides, and roller slides can offer low-friction linear movement for equipment powered by inertia. Similar to linear bearing, linear motors are also popular in the industry, which are machine device that is designed to convert one form of energy source into the linear mechanical energy.
One of the most commonly known examples is the heat engines, such as the internal combustion engine, burn a fuel (i.e. gas) to create heat which is then used to do work afterward. Meanwhile, electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical motion, and pneumatic motors use compressed air, and clockwork motors in wind-up toys use elastic energy. To sum up, the linear motor generates linear force from a power source, granting stable movement. A linear motor is very important in the automation industry as well as the machine tool industry because most of the smooth movements triggered by a motor as sources have to be transformed by this means as the method for the carry of force to be steady and controllable.
